EV incentives in B.C.

Explore rebates for new EVs and chargers

Switching to an EV comes with many benefits, and the current financial rebates are a good incentive to take the plunge sooner rather than later. Review the various EV rebates below to make sure you don't miss out on the offers available to you. Remember to read up on the eligibility criteria of each program before making a purchase.

Saving money while buying an electric vehicle

B.C.'s vehicle rebates

Individuals leasing or buying a new electric vehicle in B.C. are eligible for up to $4,000 off the after-tax vehicle price, thanks to the government of B.C.'s CleanBC Go Electric program.

Here's the breakdown of the incentive amounts for the purchase or lease of each vehicle type:

  • Up to $4,000 for the purchase or lease of a new battery electric vehicle (BEV) or extended-range (ER)-EV.
  • Up to $2,000 for the purchase or lease of a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).
  • Up to $4,000 for the purchase or lease of a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle (FCEV).

Cars (including two seaters, compacts, mid-sizes, and large cars) with an MSRP of more than $55,000 are not eligible for the incentive. Larger vehicles with an MSRP of more than $70,000 are not eligible.

  • To apply for a rebate, you must be a B.C. resident with a valid B.C. driver’s licence. The rebate amount is based on your total gross annual income and the type of vehicle you’re buying.

Individual income Rebate for BEVs and long-range PHEVs Rebate for PHEVs with less than 85km electric range
    Less than $80,000 $4,000 $2,000
    $80,001 - $90,000 $2,000 $1,000
    $90,001 - $100,000 $1,000 $500

If you have an income of $100,001 and above, you're not eligible for a rebate. Pre-approval for a rebate is required before buying your EV.

Individuals can only get a rebate once in their lifetime and there are different eligibility requirements if the purchase is made by a business, non-profit or government organization.

  • You have a year to use your rebate once your application is approved. Once you’re ready to make a purchase, visit your local EV dealership. Your rebate pre-approval will be tied to your B.C. driver’s licence and will be applied when you purchase a vehicle.

  • The BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation has established incentive amounts based on vehicle type and battery capacity. Battery electric vehicles and extended-range (ER) EVs, fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) with an electric range of 85 km or greater are eligible for the full incentive amount up to $4,000, while plug-in hybrids with an electric range of less than 85 km are eligible for incentives up to $2,000.

Federal vehicle rebates

Get up to $5,000 off the purchase price of a new EV

There are additional incentives for purchasing an electric vehicle in Canada. Qualifying vehicles (battery electric and longer range plug-in hybrids) are also eligible for rebates from the federal government, ranging from $2,500 for most PHEVs up to $5,000 for BEVs and a few select PHEVs. Vehicles need to have a base model MSRP of $55,000 or less, with higher values qualifying for larger vehicle types.

Federal incentives are in addition to provincial rebates and are also applied at the point of sale. Pre-approval is not required.

  • There are two provincial rebate options available to help apartment and condo buildings support EV charging.

There’s the EV Ready option, which is a set of three cohesive rebates for your project:

    • Up to $3,000 for creating an EV Ready plan for your building
    • Up to $600 per parking stall to installing the electrical infrastructure to implement your plan
    • Up to $1,400 per charger for purchasing and installing the chargers to implement your plan.

Or, there’s the option of the standalone EV charger rebate, where you can get up to $2,000 per charger.

There are other factors that determine the rebate amounts you’re eligible for. Learn more about charging rebates for apartment/condo buildings.

  • There are also provincial incentives for the purchase and installation of eligible EV chargers at workplaces, up to a maximum of $2,000 per charger.
