About the program

Rebates are available to help homes and workplaces across B.C. get ready for electric vehicles (EVs).The program is funded by the Government of B.C. and administered by BC Hydro and Fortis Electric. If you're a Fortis Electric customer, please apply through their website.

Rebate offer

Owners or residents of single-family homes, row homes, duplexes or townhouses, that purchase and install an eligible Level 2 EV charger can receive a rebate of up to 50% of costs, to a maximum of $350.

For a limited time BC Hydro is offering additional funding of up to $250 for single family home customers who install an eligible JuiceBox smart EV charger. This funding is in addition to the rebate of up to $350 offered by the Clean BC Go Electric EV Charger Rebate Program.

What is a smart charger? These chargers connect to the Internet, usually by wi-fi and your Internet connection.  This allows you to schedule your charging and get more information about your charging and electricity consumption. In the future, they may also allow you to participate in any new BC Hydro incentive programs and special rates.

EV Charger eligible for the BC Hydro smart charger top up are listed here.

How is the smart charger top up determined?

The top up rebate will be determined after the base rebate offered by the CleanBC is reached.  For example, if a customers eligible costs are $1100, they would receive a total rebate of $550.  The following formula is used:  50% of costs is $550, reaching the Clean BC Go Electric EV Charger Rebate Program maximum of $350 for single family homes.  BC Hydro would then provide an additional $200 top up to reach the funding limit of 50% of the customer costs.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the single-family home EV charger rebate, you must purchase and install an eligible charger and submit your application within 90 days of the charger installation.

Review the eligible costs and charger criteria below.

    • Purchase cost of the EV charger
    • Labour and construction costs for installation by a licensed electrician
    • Electrical and related permit costs
    • Cost of electrical design required for the charging station

Note: This rebate is not available for the costs to install a 240V outlet only.

    • Charger is wall mounted at the electrical service address provided in the rebate application
    • Electrical permit is obtained (if you’re hiring a licensed contractor, they'll apply for this permit on your behalf)

Note: This rebate is not available for the installation of an electrical outlet only.

    Why are electrical permits required?

Permits are a legal requirement in B.C. and often necessary for home insurance purposes. They help determine whether electrical work is done safely in compliance with the Electrical Codes and Standards in British Columbia. For your safety, please consult with a certified electrician, your municipality or Technical Safety BC about obtaining an electrical permit before commencing any electrical work.

    Who issues the permit?

Depending on where your property is located, Technical Safety BC or your municipality will issue the permit. Check your jurisdiction.

    • Purchased and not leased
    • Approved for sale and use in Canada and have cUL, ULC, cETL, CSA, or cQPS certification
    • A Level 2 charger, 208 volt or 240 volt, and feature a SAE J1772 standard plug head*
    • New, not used or refurbished
    • A plug-in or hardwired charger model

    Find rebate-eligible EV charger models

*The only exception to the SAE J1772 plug head requirement is the Tesla Wall Connector. The Tesla Mobile Connector is not eligible for rebates.

  • If the EV charger rebate program incentive is combined with any other incentive, it'll be capped so that the total incentives don't exceed the total cost of the equipment and installation.

Required documentation

Make sure you have the necessary documents ready before you start your rebate application. The documents required vary depending on your project.

  • You’ll need to provide:

    • Charger invoice showing proof of payment
    • Installation invoice (must show proof of payment and itemized costs broken down by activities performed). See a sample invoice.
    • Electrical permit number
    • Picture of the installed EV charging station
  • You’ll need to provide:

    • Charger invoice showing proof of payment
    • Inspection invoice showing proof of payment
    • Certificate of successful inspection

An electrical permit is required under this option. Rather than the licensed electrician, the homeowner is responsible for applying for the permit.

  • You’ll need to provide:

    • Charger invoice showing proof of payment

This option is only available to those who had a pre-existing 240-volt outlet which they plugged their new charger into. In the application, you’ll need to confirm that the outlet is compliant with local electrical code requirements and that a permit was obtained for its installation. If you're unsure, you'll need to contact Technical Safety BC or your municipality as it depends on where your property is located. Check your jurisdiction.
